Wisconsin Critical Access Hospitals’ Performance: Successes, Challenges, Needs, and Next Steps

Wisconsin’s Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs) face several challenges in achieving financial success.  This study follows an inductive approach to identifying those challenges by selecting hospitals with the highest and lowest financial indicators and simply asking their CFO’s.  We found that a great degree of variability exists across the state, and even within regions. We believe that this variability in barriers to financial success hinges upon several factors, some of which can be remedied with careful strategizing and others which are not easily changeable.
