Appeals Court Orders COVID-19 Data to Be Made Public

The Wisconsin Court of Appeals ruled against the state’s largest business lobby and ordered the release of data on businesses linked to COVID-19 outbreaks. In October, Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce sued to keep the records secret after the Milwaukee Journal- Sentinel requested data on 1,000 businesses in the state. The lobby argued that this outbreak data is protected by patient privacy laws. This week’s court ruling stated that patient privacy rights belong to individuals, not companies. Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce is expected to take the case to the State Supreme Court.
