CDC Criticized for Communications Efforts

The CDC is facing criticism for its cautious messaging on mask wearing and for being a bit slow to communicate clearly with the public. Critics also point out the CDC’s abstinence-only approach to COVID-19, instead of the typical public health approach of harm reduction. While the CDC has its critics, it also has its defenders. “In every public health crisis, the complaint is that the CDC is too slow to make recommendations,” said Rich Besser, former acting CDC Director. “It’s an issue that the CDC has always grappled with and will continue to grapple with.”
