Hospitals Challenged by Worker Shortages

Hospitals are offering huge signing bonuses and big paychecks to healthcare professionals as the spread of COVID-19 has led to a shortage of healthcare workers in the state. One traveling healthcare company is advertising a registered nurse position that comes with a $10,000 signing bonus. Another company, Fastaff, is offering to pay nurses $4000 a week to fill positions in COVID-19 hotspots. The Evers administration signed an emergency order on October 1st that allows out-of-state healthcare professionals to practice in Wisconsin. The Dairy State is not the only place facing a shortage of health care workers as COVID-19 is blazing across the Midwest. Dr. Richard Waldhorn, a critical care physician with Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, told the USA Today that staffing is often “the weakest link” in a pandemic.
