Local government leaders are hesitant to mandate masks after recently updated CDC guidance suggested that fully vaccinated people should mask up in some areas. The CDC says counties with substantial or high transmission of COVID-19 should wear masks when in public indoor settings. Since the beginning of the August, these counties include Adams, Ashland, Bayfield, Buffalo, Calumet, Dodge, Forest, Iron, Oneida, Pepin, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Rock, Sawyer, Shawano, Washburn, Washington, Waukesha, and Waupaca counties. Most new COVID-19 infections are among the roughly 50 percent of Wisconsinites who haven’t yet been vaccinated against the pandemic disease.
