The Need for Post-COVID First Responder Medical Surveillance Grows

In a recent opinion piece in Fire Engineering, researchers say it’s time to create a long-term COVID-19 medical surveillance program for first responders. They say public health data suggests the need to have an “organized, systematic, and ongoing approach to monitoring first responders and healthcare providers who have been exposed to coronavirus or been hospitalized with a diagnosis of COVID-19.” Researchers also call for studies on the mental health impacts of the pandemic on fire and EMS personnel.
