Pandemic Leads to Increase in Rural Telehealth Visits

Telehealth appointments have grown dramatically for the Marshfield Clinic Health System. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Marshfield Clinic had 15,000 telehealth visits per year. Since mid-March, there have been 20,000 telehealth appointments. This dramatic increase in telehealth appointments does not come close to the number of visits canceled, says Chris Meyer, Marshfield Clinic Health System’s director of virtual care and telehealth. “Twenty thousand visits in six weeks is mind-boggling to me, but we should have done 100,000 if we wanted to replace the business we lost,” Meyer says.
