Paying More for Less

The lack of competition among insurance companies in rural areas means rural residents are more likely to have only one choice of insurer and to pay higher than average premiums, according to a report from the University of Minnesota. The report says that residents who are pinched hardest by healthcare costs are those who make too much to qualify for Affordable Care Act subsidies, about $51,000 for a single person.
