Rural Hospitals Closures Leads to Less Access to Care

Because the number of rural hospital closures doubled from 2013-2017, Congressional representatives asked the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) to examine the effects of the closures on local residents. Looking at data from 2012-2017, the GAO report concludes that the number of healthcare providers and the types of services provided declined over time in rural counties with hospital closures. The GAO reports also found longer transportation times these counties. No Wisconsin rural hospitals closed in the 2012-2017 report time frame.
