Health Professionals Warn of Mosquito-Spread Virus in Western Wisconsin

An Eau Claire County resident was diagnosed with eastern equine encephalitis a week after horses in three northwestern Wisconsin counties were infected with the virus. The virus is transmitted by infected mosquitoes. Most cases are mild, though the virus has a 30% fatality rate in people who develop neurological symptoms. Health professionals recommend that people contact their primary care doctors if they suffer from debilitating headaches, joint pains, or fevers after getting a mosquito bite.
